The Species 2000 China Node is a regional hub of the Species 2000 program and is launched up on 20, October 2006.
The goal of the Species 2000 China Node project is to provide a validated checklist of all species (plants, animals and microorganisms) distributed in China to all users in the world. This will be achieved by bringing a series of databases together, each of them covering a group or groups of organisms in China. The checklist will be freely provided for users by a website supporting the online query to the dynamic checklist and annual checklist, and a CD providing the annual checklist. The website and CD will be in both Chinese and English Language.
2008 Annual Meeting of Species 2000 China node in Beijing
Monday, 12 January 2009
On January 5, 2009 (Monday), Species 2000 China Node Working Group held an annual meeting in the Institute of Zoology, CAS. The meeting was chaired by Prof. Ma Keping, the director of Institute of Botany, Chinese Academy of Sciences and the leader of Species 2000 China Node. All responsible people of the working group and a number of taxonomic experts from the Institutes of Botany, Zoology, and Microbiology attended the meeting. Dr. Wang Lisong, member of the plant group, firstly briefed on cataloging process of China's higher plants database. Group of plants has made good progress and achieved the expected results in 2008, completed data cataloging of more than 100,000 species names of almost 40,000 groups, and established a practical database on morphological characters; Prof. Ji Liqiang, chief of fauna group, sumed up the works in second half of 2008 on the catalogue of animal species, progress made from animal data collecting, collating and updating of the correlated software. He also gave a detailed discussion on the establishment of a national standard taxonomic code for vertebrate animal, as well as the investment of the dynamic updating system for China / Global Species Database. Mr. Ma Juncai and Prof. Yao Yijian, the responsible members of micro-organisms, reported on recent literatures' accumulation of fungi species and progress of fungi database. The report showed that both the data cataloging and literatures' collecting on fungi species are still lacking, it's time to strive forward the catalogue of Fungi species.
After all the reporting, coming to a discussion on determining the next target of the Species 2000 China Node in the year 2009, the future should focus on insect, invertebrate animal, marine organisms and micro-organisms, bring more taxonomists and computer experts into the project together, in order to establish an open species database service for the scientific research and satisfy the needs of national development. Additionally, the work group made a preliminary discussion on launching up the China node of EOL(Encyclopedia of Life) in 2009.
Through the meeting, acknowledgements were given to the productive work of all members of the Species 2000 China Node Working Group in 2008. Everybody was encouraged and actively agreed to participate in the work on establishing the universal catalogue of species.
Furthermore, we are very appreciative for the attendance of the Academician Wei Jiangchun from the Institute of Microbiology, Chinese Academy of Sciences. His presentation gave us a support and lots of recommendations on the cataloging and database construction work of species 2000.

Launch of the 2008 Annual Checklist in Beijing
Friday, 29 August 2008
2008 Annual Checklist of the Catalogue of Lifeļ¼China has been launched on 1st April 2008 in the Institute of Zoology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing, China. The first edition of the Annual Checklist contains 44141 species of animals and plants. While plants comprise of 30467 species of seed plants, 2285 ferns and 2585 lichens, animals is made up of amphibian (346 species), reptile (327), fish (3235), bird (1246), mammal (549) and spiders (3101). On launch ceremony, Prof.Frank Bisby, Prof. Keping Ma and other members of Species 2000 Team gave excellent lectures refers to species inventory, database management and biodiversity informatics, etc.
Annual Checklist 2009 of the Catalogue of Life, China Initiative On 28th April, 2008 the taxonomists and information technicians from Chinese Academy of Sciences and Universities have a meeting to review the progress last year and discuss the further activities. Prof. Keping Ma, executive director of Species 2000 China Node, presided over this meeting. Annual Checklist 2009 of the Catalogue of Life China will focus on: Expanding taxa of invertebrate animals and insects Inventorying marine species speeding up collection and compiling data of micro-organism It is expected that the Annual Checklist 2009 of the Catalogue of Life China will be finished by 2009 Spring Festival. By establishing some sub-databases on plant species such as ferns, lichens, gymnosperms, monocotyledons and dicotyledons, Dynamic Checklist 2009 of China on plant will be developed first.
